Nurture Nature Center engages both artists and non-artists alike in arts programming that promotes understanding of our environment, strengthens community bonds, and spurs creative self-expression and growth. Arts programming at NNC includes the Perspectives: Art on Environmentproject, artists’ talks, themed open mic nights, Slow Art Day International Celebration, artists’ workshops series and open studios.

Sunday, October 1st, 2023, 3:00 pm – 4:30pm Free and open to the public Jim Toia: Joshua Tree Desert Crust Project
Jim Toia has been visiting Joshua Tree California since 2017 developing a body of work based on his observations of the delicate desert crust, Cryptobiotic soil. The crust helps to stabilize the desert floor, create purchase for small plants and animals and (its instrumental in how much carbon it holds in the earth) or (its significant/instrumental carbon sink properties?)
Toia will speak about the most recent culmination in his journey, Crypto X, a large sculptural work created for his residency host, BoxoPROJECTS, for their 10th anniversary exhibition in November, 2022.
Toia’s work will be on view at the Zimmerli Museum at Rutgers University, Sept. 13, 2023 – July 14, 2024.
