NNC has installed an Urban Recycle Garden in its small parking area along Pine Street to create an exhibit for the Easton community. In this pocket garden, we use recycled and found materials to demonstrate low-cost growing techniques for small urban areas such as walls, balconies, and small paved spaces. The space on Pine Street is typical of back-alley urban parking spaces with its cracked pavement and windowless walls, but it continues to be creatively upcycled into something beautiful.

The demonstration plantings are intended to spur the imagination. People can replicate them, or envision ideas of their own for their unused outdoor nooks and niches. NNC is making the most of the small area by growing food horizontally and vertically, and many of the sustainable techniques are the same as you might find in a larger garden. This exhibit, along with its related programming, will help gardeners to:

– Grow herbs and flowers
– Grow vegetables in containers
– Plant vegetables in succession throughout the growing season
– Compost
– Create beautiful, functional areas from previously unused spaces
– Save seeds of flowers and vegetables

This project is meant to complement ongoing garden efforts in Easton, such as the great community garden work in the West Ward and Lafayette College.

Nurture Nature Center has held multiple gardening information workshops since the Urban Recycle Garden was installed. The diverse topics included container growing, composting, seed starting, garden insects, and raised bed gardening, as well as popular hands- on sessions on building raised beds, making hypertufa planters, and creating terrariums.
